Finn's Universal Solar Panel Panels Review & Verdict

Finn Peacock has been a Chartered Electrical Engineer since 1998, and is ex-CSIRO

Back when they were available, we advised against buying Universal Solar Group PV modules—and with solid reasons why (mainly around a ridiculous warranty). As it turns out, USG solar panels are no longer available—and good riddance to bad rubbish.

Universal Solar Panel Panels: Pros & Cons

  • No longer available
  • Crap warranty conditions

About Universal Solar Panel

Australian firm Universal Solar Group (USG) started offering panels with their own branding in 2013.

USG Contact Information

For a company claiming Australian headquarters, an address for Universal Solar Group was surprisingly (or not) hard to find. We came across three different addresses, but this one should be good:

Address: Level 1, Unit 1, 65 Doody Street, Sydney Corporate Park, Alexandria 2015

Unfortunately, we couldn't find an email address or phone number; but there's a contact form on USG's rather spartan website.

Company Info

Like their address details, general company information is hard to find. But some years ago we were able to establish links between Universal Solar Group, Australian Premium Solar (APS), and installer Euro Solar (kaput since 2018)  - they were all basically the same mob.

These days, there are no USG branded panels on offer, and the company is just acting as a distributor for other brands.

USG Solar Panels

The company offered a range of USG branded monocrystalline and polycrystalline panels: USG Poly P6-60 , Mono M6-60, Mono M6-72 and Poly P6-72 Series. These were budget panels that were reportedly sometimes used in "bait and switch" installations, where a system package specifies premium brands, but come the day of installation are suddenly unavailable and replaced with cheaper, inferior quality equipment.

But Universal Solar Group solar panels are no more. It's unclear when the firm stopped offering them and the official explanation why. But we can think of a couple of reasons aside from Euro Solar (the company that mainly installed them) shutting up shop - quality and warranty issues.

Warranty Details

When they were available, USG solar panels were covered by a 12 year product warranty and a 30 year performance warranty. But SQ analysis carried out in 2017 revealed Universal Solar Group could declare those warranties void if their panels weren't serviced every 3 months, which is ridiculous.

While under the Australian Consumer Law (ACL) there is far more protection than what was offered in the USG written warranty, the nature of their warranty was a potential hurdle for claimants. If you're having trouble with a USG panel warranty claim, brush up on your rights under the ACL.

After purchasing a new property I had the solar system inspected and the whole system was faulty. All the wiring was melted in the panels and a inverter box was full of water. The system was only 3 years old. I contacted EuroSolar for a warranty claim and they said all warranty was voided due to the system not having periodical service by a registered electrician?. From that I have gathered that company is a con. Be aware

I do not know whether I should be rating the Solar Panels POOR or not.

I became concerned when I found that my Etoday and Pac readings were consistently lower than those of friends and neighbours who also had 12 panel 3KW systems. I took a series of daily readings over three weeks in Feb/Mar comparing my system with a neighbour's (on the same building line, same roof slope, visually similar panels. His panels receive an amount of shade in the early morning). My Etoday and Pac readings were consistently lower, between 9.5% and 18.5% on each reading. In Feb/Mar the max Pac reading I captured was 2012W, - but usually in full sunlight and with the sun at 90, the reading was just under 2000W

As mentioned above, we have to see it in operation in mid-summer yet, but today (being 18 October) it is showing a reading of in excess of 12.
