Solarwatt used to manufacture good quality (pricey) solar panels in Germany. But the company no longer makes modules there and appears to have exited the Australian market as well.

Solarwatt History

The company was founded in 1993 by Dr Frank Schneider and Lothar Schlegel. Solarwatt launched the world's first glass-glass solar module around 1998. The firm gained a reputation of manufacturing high quality modules - but they also had a price tag to match.

However, the ongoing effects of increasing competition - particularly from China - took its toll. In 2024, the firm announced in it would close its 300MW solar panel manufacturing plant in Dresden, Saxony; opting to manufacture elsewhere. As the old saying goes, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

SolarWatt solar panels were available in Australia for many years, but it appears the firm quietly exited the country in 2022. While the CEC approved panels list still listed a number of models early in 2024, those listings expired at the end of September 2024, and there are now none.

Warranty Information

Something that separated SolarWatt from the pack for many years was its product warranty - 30 years.

For Australian owners of SolarWatt panels, if problems arise the first thing you should do is contact the company that installed them as they are responsible for warranty issues. If that doesn't work out for whatever reason (for example, the installer has disappeared too), try contacting the firm using the details provided above.

We chose to go with the German Solarwatt panels manufactured in Dresden. There were 32 x 320 Watt Panels put on the roof capable of producing up to 10.24kW of total solar power. Maurice and his team worked hard to get this accomplished seemingly effortlessly and showing care and competence.

Same comments apply here as above. First impressions: It is a quality product. The power delivery even on cloudy days is very impressive. The caveat as always, is that this review is based on the first twelve days of use, but if it continues to perform as well as it does then I would recommend both the SMA Sunny Boy inverter & SolarWatt Vision panel combo....buy with confidence on these two.

Probably because we have over oversized the panel array relative to the inverter (8kw panels, 6kw inverter) the system seems remarkably efficient under less than ideal conditions and puts out a lot of energy.

I've been impressed with the panels' ability to generate some energy even on dull days. Adding StorEdge optimisers allows the panels to perform well even while unexpected distant objects and power lines cast small shadows on the panels.
