Company Information

Leapton Energy was founded in 2012 in Kobe, Japan and opened a Chinese factory in 2015 in Jiangyin City in Jiangsu Province. In 2017 Leapton built a second solar panel factory in Changshu, Jiangsu.

Leapton Solar panels were first approved for use in Australia by the Clean Energy Council in October 2018. As at December 2024, the company claimed an annual production capacity of 3GW.

Leapton Australia Saga

Around mid-2022, an odd message appeared on what was the Australian Leapton website at the time. To cut a long story short, Leapton Energy in Japan told us the company operating that website had Leapton’s logo and trademark authorisation terminated in July that year. The spurned company wasn't happy with the situation, and Leapton wasn't happy with what that company stated on the now rebel website. As at late 2024, that website is still operational. You can read more about what happened here.

Leapton Solar Panels

Leapton has a bunch of solar panels models listed by the CEC; but we'll just focus on a few that are suitable for residential rooftop installations.

LP182*182-M-54-NB-54

These are dual glass bifacial N-type TOPCon solar panels available in front-face wattages of 420W - 440W. Measuring 1762mm*1134mm*30mm, the modules weigh 25kg. The LP182*182-M-54-NB-54 series have efficiencies up to 22.02% and a temperature coefficient of 0.30%/°C. The panels have an operating temperature of -45°C~+85°C

LP182*210-M-48-NB

Also a bifacial TOPCon panel, the LP182*210-M48-NB is available in 435W-450W and has the same dimensions as the modules above. The only real difference appears to be the use of 182*210mm cells as opposed to 182*182mm.

LP182*182-M-54-NH

The LP182*182-M-54-NH is a monofacial panel with N-Type TOPCon cells and is available in 430 - 450W. At 1722mm*1134mm*30mm, these are slightly smaller than the bifacial panels and signficantly lighter too at 21kg. Conversion efficiencies range from 22.02% to 23.04% and the temperature coefficient of Pmax is -0.30%/°C

Warranty Details

All the panels noted above are backed by a 25 year product warranty and 30 year performance warranty, with a minimum 87.4% of original capacity warranted at the end of year 30.

Research into panels tells me these are great bang for buck. Sure you can get more efficient, but you're better off buying an extra panel. Sure you can get ones that lose efficiency slower... but you're better off buying an extra panel. Sure you can get them made in places other than China, but you're going to have to cough up $$$. A Japanese owned company that makes them in China I think is the best compromise.

This company is a mess. They are currently selling the panel under a company just set up in a new ABN (April 2022) in Australia. They have been changing ABN and name to trade in Australia. It is really difficult to trust this company and ABN will be existing the next 25 years when they offer 25 years warranty. I regret my purchase as I didn’t know they are so NEW in Australia. I do not recommend anyone to this company. The installation is bad too. I had one panel hanging out of the roof ridge and two panels are not install as contracted. The installer keep pushing me to pay the final invoice when I ask them to come back and fix it. They do not want to fix it unless I pay. Really unprofessional. This is a nightmare and the worse purchase decision I ever made….

Chose Risen panels but apparently not available and were replaced with Leapton. When Inverter was being repaired technician was surprised at low power production. He inspected panels and found that optimisers had not been installed. This was remedied as well as moving panels to receive more sunlight.

440 W Leapton solar panels were installed. So I needed only 15 panels for the allowable 6.6kW

The entire panel selection process is very confusing to the layman trying to buy a product that you want to last for 25 years. The warranty period is often quoted as some sort of gauge to use for panel selection. It is getting to the point that all panel manufacturer's offer similar terms. One additional perspective also offered is if they have a local office for support. It seems that maybe 1/2 of the panel vendors have a local office now as well. Maybe solar panels are becoming more of a commodity and the provider/installer should select the best for the consumer?

Installation good but they moved forward the installation date so didn't do a site visit beforehand. Their virtual plan layout didn't work and had to adjust the layout on the day. I would encourage others to ensure sunterra do the planning visit first (even though the sales person said the roof plan etc was very easy and they had elected to do e this, they weren't correct, and the installing team would have benefited from someone visiting prior)
