LDK Solar Panels: Pros & Cons

About LDK Solar

LDK Solar was founded in China in 2005 by Xiaofeng Peng and just after two years, it was NYSE listed. But the party didn't last.

Company Info

LDK grew into one of the biggest Chinese PV manufacturers at one point, with production plants located in Suzhou, Xinyu and Nanchang. By 2011, it had 3GW of annual production capacity.

It also got into the polysilicon game, with two plants in its portfolio before it went bust. This meant it was completely vertically integrated, giving the firm control over each step of the production chain, from research and development to the production stage. It also provided wafers to other major panel manufacturers around at the time.

The firm had 24,000 employees at one stage, but by the time it went belly-up, the headcount was down to 8,400.

LDK filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2014 and the firm and its subsidiaries were forced into bankruptcy in 2015. The company pointed its finger at at oversupply, falling prices and major operating losses as the culprits for its demise.

LDK Solar Panels In Australia

There was a wide range of LDK solar panels available in Australia - from 190W to 295W in both mono and polycrystalline. These were budget panels rather than high performers.

While LDK went into bankruptcy in 2015, it wasn't until late 2018 that ASIC received an application to deregister LDK Solar Australian Pty. Ltd. under s601AA. This means the company was not carrying on business, had assets worth less than $1,000, no outstanding liabilities and was not a party to any legal proceedings in Australia.

Warranty Info

LDK Solar panels had a product warranty of 10 years and a performance warranty of 25 years. While none would be still covered under the product warranty, all would still have performance warranty coverage. However, unless the company that installed your LDK solar panels is still around, you won't be able to claim on it.

These panels perform better when they're cooler (up to 20%, most noticeable when cloud cover clears during the midday sun, or when cold SW'lies are fanning the panels), so installing them where they might get some active cooling from wind would increase power output (such as overhanging the roof apex, or tilted north on an east facing roof for southeast tradewind cooling in coastal Qld areas).
