The worldwide production of solar panels has suffered another blow, after Transform Solar – a joint project between Micron Technology and Origin Energy – is to cease operations in Idaho.
We reported last week that the red light had been given to solar panel production in Sydney by Silex Systems, which cited market conditions as the reason behind its decision.
Much the same situation has emerged in the US, as Transform Solar believes there is currently an oversupply of the products across the world and little support for investment in the technology.
As a result, operations will be reduced over the next three months, leading to job losses in the process.
What does this mean for Australian consumers?
Origin Energy was keen to point out that the "retailing of solar energy products in Australia is a key component of Origin's retail and commercial customer offerings", so it will do all it can to support those who have installed the systems on their homes.
This will no doubt come as a relief to many of you who have a Transform Solar system on your property!
