The city of Hervey Bay is situated four hours drive north of the state capital Brisbane and is arguably one of the most desirable areas in which to live in Australia. With its beaches, agreeable climate (an average of 30 degrees Celsius in summer and 23 degrees in winter), sunny days and abundant facilities – the Hervey Bay region appears to have it all.

Hervey Bay is a progressive city with all the “get-up-and-go” attitude that you’d expect of a thriving (and growing) region; including embracing solar energy. An example of this is the Wide Bay Water Corporation’s construction of a community solar farm near the city. Fraser Coast Community Solar Farm consists of 1,500 ground mount solar panels, two inverters and a step-up transformer. The system produces 630 megawatt-hours of clean electricity per year, which is fed into the mains electricity grid.

While the largest solar installation, it certainly isn't the only one. Residents of Hervey Bay are also installing solar panels in droves; slashing their electricity bills and emissions in the process. Of the top 10 solar power installation hot spots in Australia as at June 2020, five were in Queensland and one of those was Hervey Bay. At that point, more than 13,700 systems had been installed in the 4655 postcode, with a collective power capacity of just north of 57MW - it's quite an achievement.

All roads lead to the sunny Fraser Coast city of Hervey Bay it seems and with ideas like the community solar farm and uptake of smaller PV systems, a cleaner energy future for the region is secure.
