New Solar Installation in Rosebery

1. Had three quotes for solor installation to my home. Had differential feedback as to what my requirements exactly were.
Two said power box was not big enough and would need to be upgraded. The only one to go into the ceiling for an inspection and used a ladder to actually inspect up on my roof, was the installer who won my confidence.

2.The customer contact, from the receptionist Izzy to the installer Adam and the owner Matt who were extremely easy to work with and patient with a customer who had lots of explaining the whole process of Solar and how it all comes together.

3. Two installers worked non stop installing the system in the one day. Was a hot day to be working on the roof. Stayed and set up the system to my internet before packing up.

Very neat and precise work considering it's such a small system by the installers standard. Would highly recommend them but please be aware that you get what you pay for. In this case an extremely well presented reliable performing installation which will impress any potential house purchaser in the distant future

Lots of mistakes and lengthy delays

I've had bad experiences with solar installers in the past. Slap-dash crews of bullies who've turned up and tried to tell me what's happening on my property, instead of getting my agreement as the home-owner. Or crews sub-contracted from my energy provider who've turned up and done sub-standard, ugly work to get the job done quickly, thinking I wouldn't raise a fuss.

So when I recently decided to upgrade my old 5kW system, which wasn't up to the demand of a home-based business and an EV, I chose to use Solar Quotes' "three quotes" service - and ultimately selected an installer that some of the reviewers on the site had used themselves. I felt I was in safe hands and expected prompt, professional service from a top tier installer.

Unfortunately the experience left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

I'll preface the following by saying that the team who turned up on the day to do the work did a great job. Their workmanship and professionalism were second to none. The sales rep who came out to do the consult took a lot of time to walk me through the options and set up the best possible system and layout for our sub-optimal location and roof orientation. If my review was based on just these two things then it would be five-stars across the board.

But they were both let down by poor processes and a lack of organisation at head office, which proved costly to me in both time and money. The install took three weeks and I was left hundreds of dollars worse off.

On the first day the crew turned up on site promptly at 7:00am to discover that no scissor lift had been arranged for them to access my second storey roof. They did what they could do from the ground in the morning while they waited for it to show up - decommissioning my old inverter and preparing the rails and cable runs for the new panels.

Later in the day, while still waiting for the scissor lift, they discovered that either head office had ordered the wrong panels (415w instead of 420w) or the wrong panels had been delivered from their supplier. In the month that the panels had sat at the warehouse, no-one had checked that they had received the right ones. This put a stop to the install for the day, and I was promised by their operations manager that the install would be completed as soon as possible (ideally later that week) when the correct panels had arrived. The scissor lift also never arrived - a moot point by this stage.

Three weeks later, the crew returned for the second days work to install the new panels, only to find that again no scissor lift has been arranged for them. The guys did what they could preparing the panels on the ground, but ultimately lost hours of productivity waiting for the lift to arrive, and had to come back a third and final day to complete the install.

As I'd been without any solar generation for nearly a full month at this point, I was more than $250 worse off than had my system install been completed on the first day due to the increased draw from the grid and no feed-in. This was annoying, and there was no offer of recompense for the costs I'd incurred.

I'll reiterate that on-site crew did great work and I can't thank them enough for their professionalism and for soldiering on to the best of their ability in the face of such a shambolic situation. Head office were obviously very busy, and were barely apologetic for the disruption and numerous mistakes made.

I was quite happy to let this less-than-perfect experience go, choosing to believe that the company had learned from it. But recently I was contacted by the company to give feedback on the install, which I gave quite frankly, and to attempt to sell me a new battery system. Recounting the experience prompted me to give my review here.

Professional and quality installation

From the start Lloyd's quote was quick, professionaly done and came up with many options to choose from. After choosing the system the only hold up was waiting for Synergy approval . Approximatly 2wks due to me taking out an old system and replacing with larger one. Within a few days of approval Lioyd and Liam removed my old system and installed my new system over a three day period. The quality of work was to a very high standard, they turned up on time and cleaned up after themselves. Lioyd was very knowledgeable about solar, was always open to questions and explained my system to me after they had commissioned it. Thank you Lioyd and Liam you made the whole process easy and painless.

Our compete solar system

I’m one of those people who do a lot of research before buying anything. Our solar system was researched minutely.
We could afford the best, so REC solar panels and FRONIUS inverter were chosen. SEM Darwin was also part of my research and was chosen. We had our solar system installed 2018 with no problems whatever in the last 5yrs. I’ve always wanted to add a battery and the Tesla Powerwall 2 was a no brainer. SEM installed and with the help from a NT Government grant of $6000 the total cost to me was just over $10000.
If you want a solar system ( and battery backup) you can go no further than to use SEM. They were on time, quick and professional installation, they took car of all relevant paperwork required by NT Government departments,

After sales service lacking

Very happy with the system, a few hiccups with the install mainly due to poor weather. Switch over went smoothly with retailer.

Have reached out numerous times to SEM for advice and assistance to ensure that the system is working properly as we are still receiving what I would think are higher bills that they should be from Ergon. I did manage to get one reply stating that the bill compared to what I was generating didn't seem to add up, which is what it looks like to me.

On average we are still paying around $150 per month after installing a 13.1kw system, understanding that our feed in to the grid is capped at 5kwh.

I understand that this may be outside of what SEM do, but a bit of after sales support and guidance would be helpful. Have heard nothing from them since the install and it feels like we are on our own with no support.

Are we not partners now though our solar journey?
Are you not able to assist me in steps to reduce our grid usage?
How do I know my system is configured and working properly?

Listened and explained options

Listened to my plan to get a 6.6kW solar system, explained why a 10.4 kW system was a much better idea with a EV vehicle on order soon to arrive, designed multiple systems. Home battery options, top of line quality, etc. Haven’t seen maximum power production yet due to 5kW export limit but expecting refund from bill and it’s winter and have had numerous cloudy days. Installation was fast and professional. Very happy would highly recommend SEM Qld

Top, reliable installers - very confident in dealing with them

I got in contact with SEM Group Brisbane after looking at Solar Quotes website three years ago. I was extremely happy with the installer Jack and the quality of the solar panels and inverters they installed in my house. They handled everything and I had no problems.
Recently I decided to add a battery to my system and after again looking at the Solar Quotes website and getting a few quotes I was happy again to go with SEM Group for the installation. It was handled well by Brett and Natasha but was a little more complicated this time due to the contract I had to sign with Energex.
The LG solar panels and Enphase inverters were installed in May 2020 and the Tesla Powerwall 2 battery in May 2023.

Excellent Service

The whole process was excellent from the prompt initial contact to patience shown with my questions and providing 4 installation options - the last focussing on the future purchase of a battery.
The Electricians were professional and also alerted me to a potential problem with my meter which they were able to fix.
I would recommend SEM Group to anyone looking to install solar panels.

service was ok had to change inverter after first visit took a few visits as changed system style to suit roof. not good communication from office about schedule time. had to take days off work to wait around then told come back tomorrow. was the most expensive of 5 qoutes i got hopefully follow up service is good if needed otherwise no major problems i would still recommend sem

Excellent communication with the Company and the installer. The installer is employed by the Company, and not a subcontractor. 10 months later we asked Leigh: "Are you happy with the performance of your system so far?"

Very happy with the system. Our grid usage has dropped from averaging 1200kWh a quarter, to averaging 30kWh per month. Even with a fairly low feed-in tariff we haven't had to pay an electricity bill for the last 6 months and currently have a credit with our service provider.
Peak production months of December and January the system produced 1.6 MWh, with approximately 70% going into the grid.

5-Star Service!

5-star service all round. from quoting to installation everything was done in a timely manner and great customer service.
The installation day was seamless and excellent customer service, especially from the leader (Irish accent, maybe?). incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and happy to answer my many questions.
The thing for me was the after sale service. I see all too often that when a company has got your money then they don't care about you anymore. That is definitely not the case with the SEM team. They walked me through all the steps I required to do after the installations.

How many mistakes can one installer make...

Sales process started friendly enough - not the cheapest on the market but not the most expensive either. Fitted me in for an initial appointment pretty quickly, gave me quotes for do differently sized system and advised that it would be about 3 weeks lead time from order to install. All pretty simple and straight forward. Placed the order mid-November then...

Told that I'd receive a call after 3-4 days with an install date. 3 Weeks later and a number of phone calls, finally got a date booked for mid-Jan (a whole month later than originally told).

One week before install - I was told that I needed my switchboard upgraded (an extra $600) no mention of this beforehand, oh well.

19th Jan install date finally here :) Oh wait, the installer refused to install the system as the design would need at least 5 different strings. The installer said that he would not put his name to it as it will not perform in the way that I was led to believe (fair play by the actual installer), poor sales originally as he should have known.

So, after deliberation, I reduced my system size by removing 5 south facing panels from the original design and upgrading the inverter to SolarEdge to cope with multiple strings. Same cost ~$14k but reduced size from 13kw to 10kw. Not happy but this may be the best option.

So install date number 2 - 24th Jan. Oh wait, you only installed the panels the inverter is out of stock! Panels on and wires hanging down the wall. Nice decoration, but no Solar production.

Install date #3 - 3rd Feb. Finally I have the SolarEdge inverter installed and my Solar panels hooked up, fantastic I can start reaping the benefits. However a few days later my monitoring app is still not accessible, hang on why can't I see an energy meter? Oh that's right, they didn't install one as per the contract!

Install date #4 - 20th Feb. A contractor was sent out to install the SmartMeter. Turned up with the meter then disappeared after 10mins. Waited for 3hrs then called SEM. Apparently the smart meter cannot be installed as it will not fir in the electricity cupboard! An irate phone call led to the original installer coming back out the next day.

Install date#5 - 21st Feb (the next day) - installer miraculously installed the same SmartMeter into the same electricity cupboard - I guess the cupboard grew overnight? Finally done. Or so I thought...

A few days go by and I realise that my consumption monitoring does not look right. After reviewing the amazing SolarQuotes website (that isn't sarcasm - the Solar Quotes guys are actually amazing!) I figure that the SmartMeter has been installed incorrectly. I email the installers (SEM) with the diagrams from the SolarQuotes website instructing them how to install it correctly!

Install date #6 27th Feb - another technician arrives to re-install the SmartMeter. It is now working perfectly. More than 2mths after the original install timeframe I finally have a working solar system!

To be fair, I have to acknowledge that SEM did on this occasion send a $100 voucher by way of an apology, which I do appreciate. Surely that's the end, unfortunately no.

Now we are at 7th March and I have not heard anything from my electricity provider regarding the switch over of my meter. Surprise, surprise, they haven't received the paperwork from my installer!

I contact my installer to ask them to send the paperwork, they do not know what paperwork is required. I go back and forth over the next few days with my Installer and my Electricity provider to get to the bottom of what paperwork they need. Side note: I specifically asked when I ordered from SEM whether I would need to get involved with the paperwork etc... they said that no, it was there job - so apparently now I'm working for SEM!

SEM finally submit paperwork to SA Power Networks (something they should have done before install) and send itto my electricity provider. Wait - I notice an error as the paperwork says single phase and has an export limit of 0kwh. SEM apologise and resubmit the correct paperwork.

13th March SEM have finally sent the last piece of paperwork to my electricity provider.

And I'm done - by the way, I do not recommend SEM Group.

The QLD SEM group are very easy to contact and the recent additional installation of a Solaredge 9.7kW battery went really well and the installers Aaron & Reeve were very efficient and helpful
Jack and Steve were original panel & inverter installers
I would recommend these guys any day
You get what you pay for and while there are cheaper products out there I wouldn't hesitate to stick with quality

Dealing with SEM was an amazing experience, Joss and Brett are prompt and professional at providing you with the best solution for your requirements. Their communication was clear on to the point. SEM has been in the industry for quite a long time, and they instill confidence and trust in their customers and one of the reasons we chose SEM Group.

Professional & Trustful Solar Solution

The experience so far has been great Dane came to site explained plainly what SEM could do as we had an existing 'back to grid' system that Jacana Energy are now reducing the tariff on in NT (shocking). Once finance was finalised we received a call that day with solar panels & inverter installation booked and completed in a week. Very neat electrical job with the electrician going that extra mile for compliancy, especially in Rural properties. Just waiting on battery delivery to finish the story. With the number of times, we lose power in the Wet Season looking forward to having those batteries. Well SEM Darwin keep up the excellent customer service.

100% go with SEM Group

Being a bit of a novice when it comes to Solar, I needed to feel that I could put my complete trust in a Company that could clearly explain what would be the best set up for me and why, and be transparent on price. After doing research, I was led to SEM Group. On first contact with Aaron, he explained everything I needed to know. He followed up by providing me with a fully detailed tailored report for a system to suit my individual needs. At no point was there any hard sell. The communication was always helpful and to the point. This is very much an industry that you get what you pay for, so if a deal looks to good to be true, it probably is. I got a few comparison quotes, and the SEM quote was competitive. It was a fair chunk of money, but we just felt that SEM Group were the right company to go with. Installation was booked and contact was made the day before by SEM Group to confirm all was ok. The installation crew turned up at 6.45am and worked hard until 4.30pm to fit 32 panels on my roof and the inverter. They were a courteous bunch, and nothing was too much trouble for them. Everything was explained, and everything was done perfectly.
Would I recommend SEM Group? 100% yes! If you want a quality system fitted to save you on your bills, if you want everything explained to you, if you want all your questions answered by people who know what they are doing, if you want promises kept and a job well done, if you want peace of mind, SEM Group are the company to use.

Excellent job SEM Group

It was a prompt and professional sales consult, Adam clearly knew his stuff and his approach was good. Knowledgeable, helpful and non pushy. The timeframes and cost quoted were accurate and the install was completed on time.
Approx two months since the install the system is working well. I have had one optimiser replaced which was done with no fuss and relatively quickly.
I would recommend these guys without a doubt.

Nice and clean install. Nice people to deal with

I did not want top of the range products and prices as our power bill is not that big. Therefore we would never get pay back in time frame.
They where able to supply me a good system at at the cost I was prepared to pay. Brett was really good I ordered it on Friday and the installed on the next Tuesday with smart energy meter which was fantastic (I think I got Lucky) A very nice and clean install. I can see the benefits already.

Only seemed interested in selling product

Sales and quoting process appeared to be rushed, flawed and misleading - in particular when calculating return on investment (time to recover cost). Sales person unheard from again once sale went through.

Installers themselves seemed quick, efficient and capable, and final product seems to be good value.

Never saw anyone again after signing contract to install - all phone calls from office. No handover procedure whatsoever of product once installed, just a phone call from office essentially saying 'thanks for choosing us, all yours now...'

2+ years later I still have no idea how to read meters, or what to do with (or why I even need) the wifi connection.

Purchased 10 year 'warranty' from supplier, only ever heard from them by email 6 months after installation when they acknowledged my initial online query for a quote.

Excellent service and advice

SEM Adelaide made the whole process very easy. All the staff were friendly and professional. Steve, who did the site inspection answered all our questions and provided various options and good advice. Also not pushy! Been there done that with other companies I found myself through review sites (the three companies referred by Solar Quotes were all great). The system was beautifully installed by Reg and Malachi, and Reg explained everything and advised us how to get the most out of our system. I think we paid a fair price for a quality install. As my Dad likes to say ‘You pay peanuts you get monkeys’!

Our 8 yr old solar system became unsafe and had to be turned off, the initial installers were no longer in business. Meg at SEM was more than happy to deal with the entire warranty process on our behalf and we couldn't be more happy.
On install day the crew showed up on time and had the entire old system down and new system installed and working by 1pm. The boys were friendly and kept us in the loop. I cannot tell you how amazing it was to not have to deal with any of the drama that I know I would have got if I'd had to do this process myself.
If you're looking for the best team then they are right here. Thank you SEM, I will be back when we are ready for the air con install to be done.

Interesting Experience

Happy with what I have purchased. Installation went reasonably well and took just the day to complete. One part of the racking system was not available on the day and still waiting on it to be replaced with the correct cover. Communication with S.E.M. group has been ok given the circumstances. Incredibly frustrating waiting for electric company to change everything over now so haven't been able to use system yet. Original ratings

I have read your comments and they match exactly what has happened on your installation. Unfortunately human error resulted in 1 black isolator cover being missed off your order which I believe was discussed with you on the day (by the installer) and then again with your project co-ordinator Chantelle. Unfortunately we have no control over SAPN (I wish we did). The 1 black isolator cover which was missing (and a silver one installed on the day) will be installed as a mater of urgency and I will chase this up myself today. Apologies for this oversight and we will get your isolator cover replaced as soon as possible.

SEM Group Darwin

SEM attended my property and discussed what type of system I required. I had done quite a bit of research, so the process was easy. The installation was commenced, and I was advised that it could not be completed as the Solar panels were not available, as such the installation of the systems frame work and electrical components was completed. The following week the Solar panels were fitted. Unfortunately the sales rep I was dealing with no loner worked for SEM Darwin, and as such communication became a little problematic. There was a delay in the system being commissioned, due to a combination of SEM and the electricity provider failing to turn up as arranged.

The system is now up and running, Installation appears to be of a good standard. The system is working well. Once again communication could have been better. It is early days, but at this time I am happy with the Solar system fitted by SEM Darwin.

We received 14 options from 4 different installers !

I would definitely recommend SEM.

From the quoting process to the install and troubleshooting, everything was fast and efficient.
- Great advice received during the quoting process from Aaron
- Panels were installed 1 day after signing the quote thanks to another job being cancelled!
- Really easy admin interface with Meg with good and reactive email acommunication
- We opted for an individual panel monitoring system with a not so obvious additional subscription fee for the app. SEM was quick in covering that cost. Great customer service here.

Good job

SEM were very helpful all round with questions before during and after install. Jobs were done well as far as I can see. A couple of confusions with paperwork but easily sorted.
Pity my supplier (AGL) haven’t been as prompt and helpful with connection to grid. Install was 20/1. Might get connected 10/3 but not holding my breath as has been put back 3x so far.
Whereas my rental house which was done at same time (smaller system 6.6kW) was up & running just 2 weeks after installation through Origin.

Solar panels on new shed.

This company did not do a site visit until after the contract was signed. Even then, the quoted number of panels could not be installed because of the screw line layout on the roof. This could have been corrected with a detailed site visit and roof inspection. So the quoted 24 panel 8.88kW system became a 20 panel 7.4kW system. The installer had to explain this at the time of installation - I would have preferred the correct quote at the time. Note that the other two companies sent their reps out to inspect and measure the site before quoting.

The actual installation was good, they were tidy and punctual, and did an excellent job.

There seemed to be a bit of miscommunication after the installation, with an incorrect invoice sent referring to the original 8.88kW 24 panel system, with a credit for four panels. I left three messages to their office with no reply. However when contact was eventually made they quickly corrected their invoice to represent reality, and payment was made.
