About
Alinta Energy is an energy retailer, generator, investor and developer. The firm traces its beginnings back to the 1990's in Western Australia as AlintaGas, when it was government-owned and only involved in gas. Alinta was privatised in 1998 and began selling electricity in Western Australia in 2006. In 2007, Alinta was purchased by a consortium including Singapore Power.
AlintaGas was renamed to Alinta Energy in 2011, which is when the company began expansion into Australia's eastern states. Alinta was subsequently acquired by Hong Kong–based Chow Tai Fook Enterprises in 2017.
While not one of Australia's "big three" electricity retailers (which are Origin Energy, AGL and EnergyAustralia), the company says it has more than 1.1 million gas/electricity customers Australia-wide. It provides services in WA, SA, VIC, NSW and QLD.
Alinta Energy's "Solar Together"
Alinta Energy once offered solar power and battery system packages in New South Wales via a program called "Solar Together". This was carried out in partnership with National Renewable Network (NRN); with NRN installing the systems.
Eligible households could get a solar panel and battery solution installed at "no cost" - and without a payment plan or financing. Under the arrangement, households were shifted to a special energy plan that also offered a $30 monthly cash reward for participating in the program. NRN and Alinta Energy manage the systems as a Virtual Power Plant (VPP), and can charge and discharge the batteries as they see fit. Participants receive no feed-in tariff.
If participants wanted to cancel the arrangement within the first two years, an early exit fee of $1,200 and system removal fee applied that was based on the size of the solar system ($150 per kW). If cancelling after 24 months, only the removal fee is applied.
Solar Together was a trial initiative, but NRN says it is working with Alinta on "future projects", without specifying what those might be.
Alinta Energy And Emissions
Alinta's current generation portfolio incorporates thermal power, storage and renewables, and collectively has an operating capacity of around 3,000 MW. Most of that capacity is gas, but it also has an emissions-intensive big brown coal-fired power station in Victoria - Loy Yang B, which has a capacity of 1200 MW. The company says it is targeting net zero emissions by 2050 and developing an extensive renewable energy portfolio.
