Finn's Solahart Hot Water Heat Pumps Review & Verdict
Finn Peacock has been a Chartered Electrical Engineer since 1998, and is ex-CSIRO
Solahart are a longstanding Australian company with a great network of local dealers.
They are relatively new to the heat pump scene, so I'm going to reserve my judgement on their performance and reliability for now.
Some of their models are manufactured by Solahart's sister company, Rheem, which makes me nervous. Historically, Rheem's heat pumps do not have a great reputation for reliability.
Solahart Hot Water Heat Pumps: Pros & Cons
- Most models made in Australia
- Low GWP refrigerant models available
- Comparatively more expensive for what you get
About Solahart
Australia's Solahart launched its first solar water heater more than 70 years ago and has been producing them ever since. Much more recently, the company expanded into manufacturing hot water heat pump systems.

Company Info
Way back in 1901, SW Hart & Co. opened a plumbing business in Perth, Western Australia. In 1953, the firm launched a solar hot water system that had a separately mounted copper tank. The design was continually refined and re-designed over the decades that followed.
Fast forward to 2018, and the company unveiled Solahart PowerStore, claimed to be Australia's first solar-smart electric water heater. As for when heat pumps joined Solahart's stable, that looks to have occurred in early 2020 with the Atmos range.
Solahart is owned by Rheem Australia Pty Ltd, which also offers heat pumps.
Solahart Atmos Hot Water Heat Pump Systems
Solahart's Atmos heat pumps are all-in-one units available in a number of different models for varying household sizes and climate conditions. As a general guide, at least 50 litres of hot water per person per day should be allowed for.
All offer electric boost functions and are manufactured in Australia, aside from the Atmos Eco 180HDC, which is made by Rheem overseas. All except the 325HAV have an interactive LED touchscreen display, and all have timers - which can be particularly handy when used with a solar power system..
Atmos Eco 180HDC
The Atmos Eco 180 heat pump is a 178 litre capacity water heater best suited to small families, and uses low GWP (Global Warming Potential) R513a refrigerant. It has a Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 4.9 @ 19°C ambient air temperature and an operating temperature range from -7°C to +43°C. The 180HDC measures 1810 x 532 x 576 mm and weighs 116 kilograms empty.
What is Coefficient of Performance (COP)?
COP is a measure of heat pump efficiency, which is calculated as the ratio of heat output compared to electricity input. So, using the 180HDC as an example, for each kilowatt of electricity, it produces 4.9kW of heat under the testing conditions used. But as testing conditions can vary between models (Solahart included) and manufacturers, it can be a somewhat unreliable measure.
Atmos Eco 280HER
The Solahart Atmos Eco 280 Heat Pump is 280 litre all-in-one unit with a COP of 5.2. It has an operating range from -6°C to +43°C. The 280HER measures 1832 x 690 x 725 mm and its empty weight is 135 kilograms. It uses an ultra low GWP refrigerant - R290.
Atmos Frost 270QDR
The Atmos Frost 270QDR is - as the name suggests - frost-tolerant, has a 270 litre capacity and uses R513a refrigerant. The 270QDR measures 1825 x 725 x 690 mm and weighs around 145 kilograms without water in it.
Atmos Frost 270HAV
The Solahart Atmos Frost 270HAV is also frost tolerant, but uses a different refrigerant - R134a, which has a substantially higher GWP than R513a and R290. It has a Coefficient of Performance of 4.5. The 270HAV measures 1825 x 725 x 690mm and has an empty weight of 145 kilograms.
Atmos 325HAV
The 325 litre capacity Atmos 325HAV is best suited to areas receiving medium to high levels of solar radiation, and minimal frost exposure. It has a comparatively low COP of 3.35. The 325HAV measures 1631 x 888 x 638 mm and weighs 130 kilograms when empty. The refrigerant used is R134a.
Warranty Information
Warranty durations for Atmos hot water heat pump systems vary with the product line.
Warranty for the Atmos Eco:
- 7 years cylinder supply
- 3 years cylinder labour
- 3 years sealed system supply and labour
- 1 year other parts supply and labour
Warranty for the Atmos Frost:
- 7-year cylinder supply
- 3-year labour on cylinder
- 2-year other parts including labour.
Warranty for the Atmos 325HAV:
- 5-year cylinder supply
- 3-year labour on the cylinder
- 2-year other parts including labour:
The above warranties apply to single-family domestic dwellings - for all other applications:
- 3-year cylinder supply
- 1-year cylinder labour
- 1-year other parts, including labour.
The exception to these warranty lengths is where a rebate has been received under Solar Victoria’s Solar Homes Program. In that scenario, a 5-year whole-of-product warranty applies.
Installer Approved
In 2025 SolarQuotes held its very first Installer's Choice Awards for heat pumps. We asked installers one simple question, "If installing a system on your own house today, what brand's hot water heat pump would you use?" Solahart took 2nd place, behind iStore in 1st, and ahead of Reclaim in 3rd.
