Finn's Evoheat Hot Water Heat Pumps Review & Verdict

Finn Peacock has been a Chartered Electrical Engineer since 1998, and is ex-CSIRO

Evoheat's hot water heat pumps are in the higher price range and have been generally well-received by installers and consumers alike in Australia. However, the labour warranty is rather stingy (1 year) given these are premium-priced products.

Company Info

Like many companies these days, Evoheat's "about" page doesn't really tell you much about the firm; but isn't shy in communicating how good they are. But we were able to glean that it has a team of around fifty engineers and R&D specialists. Evoheat systems are manufactured in China.

Evoheat Heat Pump Range

Evoheat focuses on all-in-one hot water heat pump systems; meaning the tank is combined with the fan unit. If offers a range of products suitable for small households through to large, and light commercial customers.

All Evoheat systems offer 5 operation modes:

  • Power boost
  • Eco heating
  • Intelligent
  • High requirement
  • Vacation mode

Each of Evoheat's products has a touchpad on the unit for control. A Wi-Fi control app, available for iOS and Android, offers a way to monitor and control the system - but is an optional upgrade; so it will cost you more.

Evoheat says all its heat pumps are ideal for working with solar PV systems.

Evo150-1

The Evo150-1 hot water heat pump offers 150 litres capacity and is recommended for small to medium households (up to 3 people). With a Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 3.6, it has a "blue diamond" enamel coated tank, and includes a 1.5kW auxiliary heating element. Its noise rating is 45dB(A) and the refrigerant used is R134a. Weighing 91 kilograms, the Evo150-1 measures 1623.5 x 568mm.

Evo270-E

The Evo 270-E has much more capacity - 270 litres, and is suitable for households of up to 6 people. Rated at 48dB(A), it's a louder system that the Evo150-1 when in operation. This system uses R290 refrigerant (propane), which has a far lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) compared to R134a. The Coefficient of Performance of the the Evo270-E wasn't noted on Evoheat's brochure, but it appears to be 4.27.

Its dimensions are 650 x 2010 mm and its net weight is 100kg.

The Evo270-E comes equipped with a 10A power plug, although we assume it's a 3 pin plug and not 2 pin as in the image on Evoheat's website. However, use of the plug may not be permitted in some jurisdictions, where the unit will need to be hard-wired.

Evo270-1

The Evo270-1 is the predecessor of the Evo 270-E. Among the differences, the Evo270-1 is not supplied with a plug; so it must be hard-wired. The measurements are also slightly different: 1992 x 640 mm. And at 118 kg net, there is a significant difference in weight. It also uses a different refrigerant; R134a.

Evo315-C

Targeted towards light commercial use, the Evo 315-C may also be suitable for very large households. Like the firm's other units, it has a 1.5kW auxiliary heating element, and it uses R134a refrigerant.

With a noise rating of 52dB(A), this heat pump is comparatively louder than many other good quality units; so special care should be taken when choosing an installation location.

This is quite a beast - the Evo 315-C's dimensions are 2250 x 640 mm and it weighs 157kg when empty.

Warranty Info

For the EVO150-1, EVO270-E and EVO270-1, there's a 6 year warranty on the tank, 5 years on the compressor and parts, and 1 year on site labour. The EVO 315-C is accompanied by a 5-year warranty on the tank, 2 years on other parts and 1 year on site labour. The shorter warranty on the EVO 315-C is likely due to it being designed for commercial applications.

Been in service for 2 years and 2 months.
Bit annoyed with the warranty being 2 years for parts and 1 year for labour.
So a repair it needed just before the 2 years still cost me $700 for thier recomended technician. Who actually said " I only see acouple of these a year ".
Does that mean the units are reliable or he doesnt have a great depth of experience ?
