Finn's Emerald Energy Hot Water Heat Pumps Review & Verdict
Finn Peacock has been a Chartered Electrical Engineer since 1998, and is ex-CSIRO
The Emerald is a budget heat pump with mixed reviews across the internet and industry. Personally, if I were in the market for a good-value hot water heat pump, I'd buy an iStore.

Company Info
Founded in 2006, Emerald Energy is operated from Sydney’s Northern Beaches area. While its heat pump systems are designed and engineered in Australia, they are manufactured in China (as many heat pumps available here are).
Emerald All-In-One
Emerald offer three all-in one hot water heat pump models, with tank capacities of 220L (600 x 600 x 1598mm / 118kg), 270L (600 x 600 x 1826mm / 132 kg), and 320L (600 x 600 x 2050mm / 146 kg). Instead of being the usual cylindrical design, these units look more like a rectangular prism with rounded corners - quite a streamlined effect.
Each model has the option of a built-in electric element (1.6kW) to provide faster heating and reliable supply of hot water, even during high demand. The tank is constructed from carbon steel with diamond enamel coating. The compressor is made by Highly, which is a Hitachi joint venture. The refrigerant used is propane (R290). While flammable, this has a comparatively very low Global Warming Potential (GWP).
The Coefficient of Performance (COP) of Emerald all-in-one systems is 4.9 according to the firm; which is quite good for products in this price range.
In normal operation, the sound level of these heat pumps is 49dB(A), but in "silent" mode, that can be reduced to 45dB(A) - but with some impact on performance. The working temperature range with an element is -15°C~43°C and without, -7°C~43°C..
The all-in-one comes with Wi-Fi and an app, so you can monitor and control the unit from wherever you are. It can be used to:
- Get energy consumption data
- Automate actions
- Turn the unit off and on
- See the temperature of the water
- View water tank capacity
- Boost heating
- Switch between "silent" and normal mode.
Emerald Split Systems
In a split system, the tank and heat pump are separate. Emerald's split systems are available in 200L (505 x 1665 mm / 74 - 76 kg) and 300L (580 x 1735 mm / 100 - 102kg) tank sizes.
The outdoor unit uses R290 refrigerant, which is propane, measures 804 x 327 x 555 mm and weighs 27kg. As with the all-in-one systems, the split have a claimed Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 4.9.
Designed to perform in a temperature range of -15°C to +46°C, Emerald's split systems also offer the option of a boost mode with an electric element to accelerate water heating for times when there's unexpected demand spikes or extended poor weather conditions.
The split system's control panel is built into the outdoor fan unit, allowing for system control - there's no app.
Warranty Information
The warranty offered by Emerald is 5 years on the system, and 2 years labour and service.
