Finn's EO EV Chargers Review & Verdict

Finn Peacock has been a Chartered Electrical Engineer since 1998, and is ex-CSIRO

EO is a British manufacturer of teeny-tiny EV wall chargers. Australian warranty and tech support contact details are unclear, so if these are important aspects to you (and they should be), perhaps consider another brand. Also be aware that the "solar matching capability" of the Mini Pro 2 isn’t really a "smart" charging feature - it’s based on scheduling rather than on the availability of surplus solar.

About EO

EO started in the UK in 2014 and offers EV depot design, electrical installation, grid upgrades, and ongoing operations and maintenance for electric vehicle fleets. It also produces chargers, and claims to have shipped more than 85,000 units globally.

EO Mini Pro 2

At just 175mm x 125mm x 125mm and weighing 1.3 kilograms, the EO Mini Pro 2 was touted to be the world's smallest charger when it was first released

This is a single phase charger capable of supplying up to 7.2kW.

The EO Smart Home App allows you schedule, start, stop and lock the charger remotely. It also offers solar matching capability, enabling your EV to be charged with self-generated solar energy. But this seems to be a fairly basic function set around a schedule rather than if surplus solar is actually available during that time frame. If it isn't, it will use mains grid electricity instead to match the minimum charging rate that has been specified.

You can also select your electricity tariff and let the app automatically determine the cheapest time to charge your EV.

EO Mini Pro 3

The new generation of the Mini Pro is a little larger and smarter than its predecessor. It's 230mm x 151mm x 125mm and is available in single-phase and three-phase models.

It's OCPP-compliant, CT clamps are included as standard, and you can charge your car from surplus electricity from your solar panels. The EO Mini Pro 3 also has power balancing capability to avoid overloading your home's electrical supply. The tethered version comes with a 5 metre cable, but a socketed unit is also available. It can be operated in temperatures between -25°C and 50°C, making it suitable for use just about anywhere in Australia.

In terms of connectivity, Wi-Fi, Cat 5 Ethernet, Bluetooth are standard, with 4G cellular as an optional extra.

Warranty Details

The EO Mini Pro is accompanied by 3-year product warranty, but we weren't able to locate Australian warranty details on EO's website. We also weren't able to locate an Australian office, or a local tech/warranty support contact.

Trina solar panel review

EV Charge Aust are following up with EO in UK to see how to adjust the app so that I can run the charger only on excess PV energy and to lock the charger. Both were promised but EO Smart Home App as provided does not do. Also it doesnt monitor in near real time and the app is very clunky.
