Finn's DeWalt EV Chargers Review & Verdict

Finn Peacock has been a Chartered Electrical Engineer since 1998, and is ex-CSIRO

Do yourself a big favour – before buying a hard-wired DeWalt EV charger straight off the shelf from a hardware store, talk to an electrician with relevant experience to avoid any nasty surprises concerning installation and to ensure it’s fit for your purposes.

DeWalt EV Chargers: Pros & Cons

  • Lack of Australian-specific information on features and warranty

About DeWalt

DeWalt, a subsidiary of Stanley Black & Decker, produces all sorts of electrical tools and related accessories. So it's no surprise the company has started producing EV chargers.

Company Info

Founded by Raymond DeWalt in 1922, DeWalt's first product was a woodworking machine. By 1941, the company was growing fast, fueled by government orders for wartime requirements. In 1992, DeWalt launched its first line of portable electric power tools, and in 1994 expanded into cordless tools - and of course, chargers for them. By 2001, DeWalt had more than 200 electric power tools and 800 accessories in its huge portfolio of products.

With 30 years experience in electrification and lithium ion battery charging under its toolbelt, DeWalt was then ready to tackle the EV charging market.

DeWalt EV Chargers

While DeWalt EV chargers are available in Australia, the company's local website contained no information about them whatsoever as at late December 2024. But here are some basic details gleaned from elsewhere.

"Smart" 3-Phase EV Charger

The Dewalt Smart 22kW 32A three-phase EV charger (EV200D-32W-22C) is IP65 rated for outdoor use and comes with a 5m tethered cable. It's compatible with the DeWalt EV charger app via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, which allows you to start, schedule and monitor charging sessions.

But what makes this charger particularly smart is anyone's guess, and how it works in with solar and to what to degree isn't mentioned.

2.4kW Portable Charger

The EV200D-10P-AU is a portable 10 amp charger with an output capacity of 2.4kW and comes with a seven-meter cable. As well as a storage bag, a metal wall plate is provided for wall-mounting options.

3.45kW Portable EV Charger

Offering a 3.45kW power output, the EV200D-15P-AU charger also comes with a seven-metre cable, storage bag and wall plate. It's IP65 rated, so safe to use outdoors. Note that this device is fitted with a 15 Amp plug. It has as a slightly larger ground pin than a 10A plug and will not fit into a standard household 10A socket.

Warranty Information

DeWalt offers a 3 year limited repair warranty that applies to branded products, unless specifically excluded. And it's hard to say if its EV chargers are included or excluded as there was zero information about these products on the company's Australian website.
