Finn's QCells Batteries Review & Verdict

Finn Peacock has been a Chartered Electrical Engineer since 1998, and is ex-CSIRO

Qcells' decision to exit Australia without so much as a press release was surprising and a bit disappointing. But thankfully, parent company Hanwha appears committed to maintaining Australian warranties. The situation was a good reminder to choose a home battery brand that's well known and well-backed – it will be more likely to stick by what it promises in terms of warranty.

QCells Batteries: Pros & Cons

  • Qcells standing by Australian warranties.
  • Batteries no longer available in Australia.

About QCells

Qcells is best known as a manufacturer of quality solar panels and has also marketed and sold a home battery here. Unfortunately, their products are no longer available for sale here as Qcells left the Australian market in early 2024.

Why Did Qcells Exit Australia?

In early 2024, Qcells decided to stop selling into Australia to focus efforts elsewhere, particularly in the USA. A spokesperson for QCells Australia told us the decision was based on the context of the Australian solar market seeing record-breaking price drops and extreme market competition over the previous 12 months.

Qcells Home Batteries

Among the batteries Qcells offered in Australia was the Q.HOME; an all-in-one battery system - meaning it combined a battery and integrated hybrid inverter within the unit. Q.HOME was scalable from 4kW to 12 kWh and was based on Lithium Iron Phosphate chemistry, widely regarded as the safest Li-ion technology. This energy storage solution has a natural cooling system allowing silent operation, a power output of 4.6kW and offers backup functionality.

The original Q.HOME was followed by the Q.HOME+. Then in In February 2022, Qcells announced a 15 year product and performance warranty for its new Q.HOME CORE battery system that subsequently launched in 2022.

The Q.HOME CORE energy storage solution was comprised of two units, the modular Q.SAVE battery the Q.VOLT inverter. The Q.SAVE battery had a 6.86kWh storage capacity, expandable to up to three units for maximum 20.5kWh capacity. With the Q.HOME CORE, the lithium chemistry has changed to Lithium Nickel-Cobalt-Aluminium Oxide (NCA). The manufacturer of the cells was Samsung.

Qcells Warranty Information

While Qcells has exited Australia, if you have any of their products the good news is they are still providing full warranty support.

If you have a problem with a Qcells battery, you should first contact your installer.  But if they are no longer around and you need to make a warranty claim, you can approach Qcells directly.  The phone number of their Australian office is 02 9016 3033.  Note that, in addition to the warranty, you are also protected by Australian Consumer Guarantees and these can apply even after the warranty period has ended.

How's your Qcells battery performing? We'd like to know - and particularly the outcome if you've needed to make a warranty claim since the company decided to leave Australia.

Q-Cells unfortunately left the Australian market not long after my first battery was installed. I had enough faith in my installers recommendations and the system performance that I ordered a second battery while they were still available. This system now fully covers my home energy consumption needs. It is a real shame that Q-cells have left our market as I would recommend them based on my experience.

Plenty of capacity. Even running our central evaporative A/C all night, the battery level never dips below 40%.

Battery charges and discharges as expected; limited controls, it might be nice to be able to tell the battery to only discharge after 3pm. On cloudy days it can sometimes enter a discharge cycle to fill gaps in usage in preference to the Grid. But energy prices are cheaper before 3pm so I'd rather offset later grid usage.

Neat and compact battery system that is easily expanded as required. The slimline dimensions and similar appearance to the inverter make it an ideal option for garage wall mounting.

Only one day in but working exactly as expected and the savings are already stacking up!

The battery is mounted next to the inverter at approximately eye-level on an exterior wall. Both components are matching and eye-pleasing in appearance, dust proof and shower resistant. They are also adjacent to the switchboard so any necessary work or adjustments can be done easily if required.

I've had nothing but trouble since these batteries were installed, inverter replaced after 1 month and now the batteries won't charge. Qcell service is dismal, they dont both following up and I'm now weeks into the issue without it being fixed or diagnosed.
Overall a great system for rural properties. A few problems with QHome system. Entry level battery is only 4kW, which isn’t really big enough, minimum should be 8kW. There is a problem with inverter communication to wifi systems which has taken several months to get working. Post purchase service was a bit off!
