Finn's PowerPlus Energy Batteries Review & Verdict

Finn Peacock has been a Chartered Electrical Engineer since 1998, and is ex-CSIRO

Melbourne-headquartered PowerPlus Energy has earned a reputation for manufacturing reliable and safe home battery solutions. Combined with local production, this makes their batteries well worth considering if buying Australian-made is important to you.

PowerPlus offers solutions for a range of applications including residential, commercial, and industrial projects - both grid-connected and off-grid. I'm comfortable recommending the company's batteries for home energy storage.

PowerPlus Energy Batteries: Pros & Cons

  • Australian-made using local and imported components
  • Compatible with a wide range of inverters
  • Scaleable
  • Modules are hot-swappable

Company Info

Founded by Bradley Paton and Simon Chan, Powerplus Energy has an estimated 80 employees.  The company designs, engineers, and manufactures its energy storage solutions in Melbourne, using local and imported components.

Powerplus Energy prioritised domestic production from the outset, which allows it to maintain high-quality standards and manufacture tailored solutions for the Australian market. This approach also helps reduce supply chain risks and delivery delays. While initially focusing on the Australian market, Powerplus Energy has expanded internationally since.

PowerPlus Energy LiFe Premium

The PowerPlus Energy LiFe Premium Series is a rack-mounted solution offering nominal storage ranging from 2.2 kWh to 3.8 kWh capacity per module depending on the model. The battery cells used in these systems are based on lithium ferro phosphate ( LFP/LiFePO4) chemistry, which is widely regarded as the safest available lithium-ion chemistry.

The latest model is the LiFe4838P, which has a nominal and usable capacity of 3.8 kWh - but note that the company says the recommended usable capacity is 3.04kWh. The LiFe4838P has new BMS and newly designed advanced status indicator light, allowing simplified fault-finding and faster repair times.

The continuous discharge power rating of the LiFe4838P is 3.22kW.

As for inverter compatibility, any brand that can handle charging self managed lithium ion batteries are suitable - for example, SMA, Selectronic, Victron and Outback.

While the LiFe Premium modules are robust, they have an IP40 rating - meaning they must be installed indoors in absence of a suitable cabinet. However, the company's Slimline Series cabinets have different IP ratings (IP54, IP65, IP66), allowing outdoor installation.

Powerplus also offers already assembled solutions; delivered in pre-wired cabinets - and you can have any number of cabinets linked in parallel. The flexible design means Powerplus Energy batteries are suitable for on and off-grid solar storage as well as other applications.

Other specifications and approximate pricing details for PowerPlus LiFe are included on our solar battery comparison table. PowerPlus Energy is currently listed on the SolarQuotes approved battery brands chart.

Warranty Information

PowerPlus Energy LiFe Premium is accompanied by a 10 year warranty. Note that the warranty does not cover batteries not calibrated to 100% every 7 days as a minimum.  This means the software tests the battery to check its condition.  For any normal battery installation, this should be set to occur automatically.  If you have a warranty issue, your first stop should be your installer. If they're no longer around, you can contact PowerPlus via the details above.

If you have a PowerPlus energy storage system installed at your home or business, we'd be grateful if you contributed your rating and review of it.

The batteries coupled with a selectronic inverted have worked flawlessly. They have taken us through a few power outages now and you can't even tell when the power is out until you are driving to work, and the traffic lights are not working. It is especially good when even after a summers night we still have some capacity left in them the next morning after running 3 aircons all night.

Chosen because it's Australian with reported great reliability and customer service from the supplier.

So far, doing the job really well. No complaints here. Also, went with a bigger case so that we could expand the system (more panels and more batteries) if needed.

Solid build, great capacity, size, looks and performance. Inbuilt BMS, very easy and safe. Highly customisable storage and TOU cost shifting via integration with Selectronic charger/inverter.

On my offgrid home, I've had my 3 x PowerPlus Eco 48V 4.0kWh LiFePO4 battery stack and 5.5 kW LG Neon PV running on Victron EasySolar for 4 months now. Great to have an Australian made energy product that's self-managing, simple to install and performs as expected. No issues and all remotely monitored via Victron VRM.
The Life ECO is the Power Plus cheaper version - no trouble at all.

Almost energy independence for over 2 years now (except on a few days in mid winter - still on grid).
7.2 kW solar, 6 kW inverter, 16 kWh batteries, SP pro 481 controller (so that batteries can charge from solar even when grid is down).
Full uninterruptible power supply. We can only lose power if ALL of 1. Grid down, 2. Batteries flat, 3. No sun (unless the system fails! It hasn't yet).
The "ECO 4840P" is a LiFEP04 48Vdc Battery that is extremely easy to install/use and very safe. Combined with one of their Racks you get a very clean install with zero maintenance requirements. Ours replaced a 7 year old Gell Cell system, which died due to the higher current demand during Grid Blackouts.
Technical Requirement for home owner with zero technical knowledge: check once in a while that the blue LED (Light) is ON for each of the batteries you have..that's it.
Should there ever be a fault, then the effected battery will trip without effecting any of the others, or your system.
And with a 10 year warranty by the Australian manufacturer, you have peace of mind.
We started with a 10 Module Rack and 2 batteries 3 years ago, then after a year added another one..and another one and then on the big Solar upgrade we added another 6 to fill up the Rack. That now gives us up to 390 Ampere at 48Vdc, which gives you about 18.5KW of instant power (Or 77A at 240Vac) . First our system used to run all lights and Power Points on the system (including pool pump, Microwave and water tank pump). This would last us comfortably all night even in Winter IF we were able to get the batteries fully charged, despite that we had the discharge level set to 56%SOC.
Now after the upgrade, we run the entire property on them, including Central air-conditioning, 2nd air-condition in the Solar Room itself, Oven/Hotplate/external garage etc.
These batteries are simple to expand, once the initial install has been done by your Solar Installer. All that needs to be done is slide it in the next available Rack space, check that the battery voltage is within 0.15Vdc of the existing battery system with a multi-meter, then click in the two cables and turn battery breaker on that is mounted at the front.
Our current system (after the upgrade):
Single Phase Hybrid system
24KW Black Winaico Gemini 400W panels
3 x Fronius Primo 8.2KW Solar Inverters
10 x PowerPlus ECO 4840 LiFE P04 batteries (40KWh with about 26KWh usable at the programmed settings of 35%SOC. System is set VERY conservative for maximum lifespan of batteries).
1 x 18KVA Himoinsa HSY-20 M5 Single Phase Diesel Backup generator with Auto Start.
2 x Selectronic SP Pro 482 (each 7.5KW)
