Finn's GivEnergy Batteries Review & Verdict

Finn Peacock has been a Chartered Electrical Engineer since 1998, and is ex-CSIRO

GivEnergy's home batteries look pretty good on the surface. But I have noticed an increasing number of poor reviews from frustrated British owners complaining of hardware and software faults, and in particular, unacceptable service response times.

So I want to see them with more time operating in Australia, with proven reliability in our scorching climate, responsive local tech and warranty support, and ease of integration with services such as Amber and VPPs.

GivEnergy Batteries: Pros & Cons

  • Looks to be well-constructed and nicely finished
  • Being new-ish products for Australia, lack of track record.

About GivEnergy

Founded ten years ago in the United Kingdom, GivEnergy claims to be the market leader in the UK home energy storage sector and has set its sights on making its presence felt in Australia.

GivEnergy kicked off with a hybrid inverter in 2017 and its first battery system was launched in 2018. The company says it became UK’s top selling home battery storage brand in 2019. It mentions hitting a 1,000 installation milestone the same year, so it gives some indication of the size of the UK market during that time.

After its success in the UK market, GivEnergy expanded into Europe in 2022. In 2023, the company attended All-Energy Australia, showcasing its wares here. The first GivEnergy batteries were approved by Australia's Clean Energy Council in 2024.

Its batteries are manufactured by Shenzhen GivEnergy Co Ltd in China, which is fully owned by the company.

"We don’t just buy someone else’s product and stick a label on it," according to founder and CEO Jason Howlett. "We control the manufacturing end-to-end."

Its UK headquarters has a solar array installed on the rooftop and energy storage in the form of an 800kWh / 250kW GivEnergy system in a 20ft container. HQ powers its fleet of vehicles with a network of seven 22kW chargers.

GivEnergy Home Solar Storage Products

In Australia, the company currently offers an all-in-one home battery, "stackable" solution, and a 3-phase hybrid inverter for use with the stackable battery.

GivEnergy All-In-One (AIO)

The GivEnergy All in One is 13.5kWh LiFePO4-chemistry battery and an AC- coupled inverter. Its design allows for multiple units to be installed in parallel. Models with 3.6kW, 4.6kW, 5.0kW, 6.0kW outputs are available, with the latter offering peak power of 7.2kW @ 10s and 6.5kW @ 30s.

When used with the GivEnergy Gateway, the system will provide power to a home (20ms switchover time) and allows for continued solar charging in the event of a blackout.

With an IP65 rating, the All-In-One home battery can be installed outdoors and its dimensions are 1100 mm x 600 mm x 280mm.

GivEnergy Stackable Battery + 3-Phase Hybrid Inverter

This is a high-voltage modular IP65 rated solution using 3.4kWh LiFePO4 battery packs. 3-6 battery packs (10.2 kWh - 20.4 kWh) can be used  per stack and up to 3 stacks can be parallelled per inverter. The GivEnergy 3-phase hybrid inverter to accompany it, which manages the output from solar panels, the battery storage system and mains grid, is available in 6kW, 8kW, 10kW and 11kW output capacities.

The charging temperature range is 0°C - 55°C and the discharging range, -10°C - 55°C.

The width and depth of the stackable unit is 480mm x 380 mm. Height will vary depending on how many modules in a stack, but for the 10.2kWh it's 635 mm, while for the 20.4kWh the height is 1085 mm.

GivEnergy Monitoring

System monitoring for both solutions is via the GivEnergy portal, which provides detailed visibility and full system customisation capabilities. There's also a phone app providing basic information about energy demand, solar  generation, grid imports and battery usage. You can also manage a GivEnergy EV charger from the app. If you're using the company's smart plugs, you'll see usage data and be able to remotely control connected appliances.

Warranty Information

GivEnergy batteries, the hybrid inverters and gateway are covered by a 10-year product warranty.

The performance warranty for the All-In-One states unlimited throughput with PV- only generated self-consumption. But this means no other energy source charging the battery at any stage of the warranty other than for maintenance purposes. When other non-PV charging sources are used, GivEnergy warrants 135MWh of total throughput energy, and at least 70% use of its 13.5kWh capacity during the warranty coverage period.

We were unable to find the performance warranty document for the stackable battery on the company's web site, but the datasheet mentions it covers 34MWh throughput for the 3.4kWh battery modules.

We're keen to hear from Australian customers with a GivEnergy battery. You can contribute a review/rating using the "leave a review" button towards the top of this page.
