Finn's ABB (Fimer) Batteries Review & Verdict

Finn Peacock has been a Chartered Electrical Engineer since 1998, and is ex-CSIRO

FIMER's had a rough run in the last few years, and as at the end of December 2024, the future of the firm isn't clear. And really, FIMER's REACT2 battery isn't anything to get excited about anyway, in my opinion. But there are plenty of other battery brands worth consideration.

About ABB (Fimer)

FIMER has a special focus on inverters, but is also dabbling in batteries for home and small commercial applications; manufactured in Italy.

Company Info

FIMER has had a presence in Australia for more than 16 years - sort of - originally as PowerOne, then ABB before ABB's inverter operations were acquired by FIMER in 2020.

FIMER as a company was established in 1942, and began developing inverters for large scale renewables in 1983 before moving into the home solar market with the ABB acquisition. While it enjoyed success for many years prior to this, the pandemic created some challenges that the company had trouble overcoming. After facing a cash crunch, FIMER concocted a “relaunch plan” in mid-2022 that appeared to be a fizzer.

FIMER went into administration in late 2023 and was put up for sale in July 2024. In late November 2024, the firm announced it had been acquired by a subsidiary of McLaren Applied Group, with the support of Greybull Capital.

FIMER REACT2 Battery

Previously known as the ABB REACT, the FIMER REACT 2 battery system is available as a 4-12 kWh energy storage solution (REACT2-BATT) or from 5 kWh to 15 kWh (REACT2- BATT-5.0). Unlike some systems that stipulate expansion within a set time-frame for warranty coverage, battery modules can be added at any time.

Designed and manufactured in Italy, the REACT2 has lithium iron phosphate cells manufactured by Samsung and includes a hybrid inverter available in power ratings of 3.6 and 5.0 kW. The FIMER REACT 2 can be AC or DC coupled. The discharge power ratings of the battery are pretty ordinary - just 2 kW and 2.5 kW depending on the model.

The ambient temperature range of this battery system is -20 to +55°C; with derating above 50°C for the 3.6kW model and above 45°C for the 5kW.

The REACT2's inverter has an environmental protection rating of IP65 - suitable for outdoor use - but the battery itself is IP54 and FIMER recommends indoor installation.

The REACT2 base model has dimensions of 740 mm x 490 mm x 229 mm.

Warranty Information

FIMER's standard warranty plan for REACT2 inverters are 5 years. For the battery itself, it's 5 years or 1825 cycles, whichever comes first. However, the warranties can be extended to 10 years, but note much of the coverage (e.g. removal and reinstallation costs) are only covered for the first 5 years.

If you're an Australian owner of an ABB (FIMER) REACT 2 battery system, share your thoughts on its performance by leaving a review.
