Home Solar Power In New South Wales
More than 892,292 small scale PV systems (<100kW) had been installed across New South Wales as at July 1, 2023 (Source: Clean Energy Regulator). Figures supplied by the Australian PV Institute estimate the percentage of dwellings in NSW with solar panels installed at 30.6% – so there’s still plenty of rooftops that could be harvesting the energy of the sun and saving those living below them a bundle of cash on electricity.
Small scale solar systems installed in NSW represent around 5.52GW of capacity. With a population of around 8,238,800 (December 2022 – ABS), there’s been approximately 670 watts of solar PV capacity installed on a per capita basis in the state compared to Australia’s average of around 780 watts.
But also added to the small-scale effort are large-scale solar farms in New South Wales – and there’s plenty more huge PV projects to come; not only providing more clean power but also a bunch of jobs.
A new 6.6 kilowatt solar power system installed on a north facing roof in Sydney could be expected to produce an average of a bit over 26 kilowatt-hours of electricity a day; or 9,783 kilowatt-hours a year. That would knock a mighty hole in the power bill of an average household, but many NSW households are choosing to go even larger in order to get the best from Australia’s “solar rebate“.
As well as powering their homes, NSW PV owners can also receive what’s known as a feed-in tariff, which is a payment for surplus electricity exported to the mains grid.
