Ballpark pricing for off-grid systems is harder to estimate than for standard on-grid residential systems, because the design is much more involved and tailored to your homes unique needs.
But - as mentioned previously - small off-grid systems start at around $25,000-$30,000.
Prices can increase significantly if you want your home to have similar levels of convenience as a residential home in a major metro area.
Advantages of a site inspection before quoting:
- You can look them in the eye and engage in a meaningful discussion about what you need and which products and options will help you achieve the security of low bills for decades.
- They can check the condition of your roof. If it is more than 10 years old it may need repairs before anything is installed. You really don't want to have to remove your panels to repair your roof a few months/years down the line.
- They can also measure the roof area. Nothing beats actually running a tape measure over the roof to double-check that the solar panels are all going to fit on.
- Shading. If you have any shade on your roof at all you just can't assess how much that will hurt your solar power system from Google Earth or Nearmap - although some new 3D modelling software can now do accurate remote shade analyses.
- Cable Routing. They can assess how they are going to get the cables from the solar panels to the inverter with as little modification to your house as possible.
- Your Switchboard. They can look at your switchboard to see if it needs upgrading and if there is space inside it for an extra circuit breaker. (Of course you can send them a photo instead)
- Inverter location. They can scope out where the inverter can go where it will be nicely shaded, out of harms way, and ideally as close to the meter as possible.
- Opportunity for other options. Having the installer visit can offer a new perspective for the installer and for you. Perhaps you can fit more panels or shading isn't as big an issue as you feared and you can discuss this with the installer in “real-time”.
- A firm quote. All the above leads to the installer being more likely to be able to give a firm quote for the job. There hopefully won't be too many exclusion clauses on the paperwork like, “subject to site suitability”.
- Minimise surprises on install day. You'll sleep better before the installation knowing that the installer has inspected the site before the big day.
Is it OK to quote without a site inspection?
There are a number of good installers who are happy to quote without site inspections. Especially, if you have a fairly modern house with a large unobstructed north-facing roof with no shade, and you have a few options for solar inverter locations that you can live with.
The risk is that when the installers arrive, they find a surprise that adds to the cost/complexity of the installation.
Many installers will absorb small 'surprise' costs as they choose not to do a pre-install inspection, but it will become your problem too if they missed something major that requires a big alteration to the quote.
Will a site visit mean I'm going to get a hard sell from the salesman?
No - I carefully vet each and every company I allow to quote through my network to weed out anyone who uses fast-talking, hard-selling salespeople. I hate them just as much as you do!
What you can expect from a site visit is an installer who is respectful of your time, doesn't use high-pressure sales tactics, and gives you the information you need to make an informed decision when the time is right for you.
Personally, I prefer a site inspection - but I respect that there are excellent companies out there that choose not to inspect every site.

I just want to be clear that buying a totally off grid system is a major investment. Typically they are at least 4 times the price of standard grid connect solar system (i.e. a small system starts at about $20k).
If you are looking for solar + batteries, but have easy access to a grid connection it is much more cost effective to stay on the grid with your batteries.

A battery that gives you the lowest bills isn't necessarily the one that will give you the fastest payback, and vice versa. Here's why:
Lowest Bills: You'll need a large battery to cover your worst case nighttime consumption (with a large solar system that will easily charge the battery through winter and overcast days). This will be expensive but will absolutely smash your bills.
Fastest Payback: You should opt for a smaller, less expensive battery system whose size is optimised for payback. This system won't reduce your bills as much as a larger system, but it will be cheaper to install and will pay for itself more quickly.
